Talking Stones in the Rhine Museum: A Journey into the Devon Sea

With the special exhibition Talking Stones – The Devon Sea, the Rhine Museum Koblenz opens a fascinating window into a time when a shallow sea shaped the landscape where the Rhine Valley is located today. The exhibition connects fossil finds from the Rhenish Slate Mountains with large-format photographs and makes earth history a tangible event experience.

When Rocks Become Stories

The exhibition tells of a world around 400 million years ago. Shells, corals, sea lilies, brachiopods, and other fossil evidence show how rich the Devon Sea was in life. For visitors, a special event atmosphere emerges, which makes the museum and science strong together: calm, focused, and full of wonder at the same time.

Discovering Paleontology

Behind the exhibition is the Paleontological Working Group Koblenz, which contributes its work and new finds to this presentation. Complemented by the photographs of Klaus Hammerl, a dense mix of research, imagery, and regional earth history is created. This is particularly suitable for families, school classes, and anyone who appreciates nature, geology, and vivid knowledge transfer.

A Strong Museum in Ehrenbreitstein

The Rhine Museum Koblenz is one of the oldest museums in Rhineland-Palatinate and showcases life along the Rhine on a large scale. The location in Ehrenbreitstein, at the foot of the fortress, gives the visit a special context. The building is largely accessible via elevator, parking is available, and bus lines stop directly in front of the museum.

Practical Planning for the Visit

The exhibition is an ideal indoor offering for a cultural outing in any weather. The museum is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, as well as Saturdays and Sundays from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM. The museum is closed on Mondays. Currently, only cash payments are possible on-site.

Those who want to experience Koblenz from a completely different perspective should note this date: Talking Stones – The Devon Sea combines science, regional history, and impressive images into a visit that resonates long afterward. Discover live now and experience the traces of the ancient sea on-site.
