When Memory Leads into Darkness: Before it Gets Completely Dark in Koblenz
On October 28, 2026, the rehearsal stage 4 of the Theater Koblenz will transform into an intense space of remembrance. Jake Heggie's chamber opera Before it Gets Completely Dark tells of identity, guilt, loss, and the question of how the past influences the present.
A Journey to the Images of the Past
At the center is Gerald Mac McDonald, a man who initially struggles with art. An unexpected inheritance leads him to Prague: As the sole heir of a Jewish art collector, Mac is confronted with his family's history and an identity that suddenly feels much closer to him. Before the paintings of his uncle Emil, which were condemned as degenerate art by the Nazis, his inner journey takes a shocking turn.
Chamber Opera between Musical Theater and Memory Work
Jake Heggie combines an immediately accessible musical language with complex dramaturgy in this one-act opera. The libretto by Gene Scheer is based on Mac's Journey by Howard Reich; the German version is by John von Düffel. Heiko Hentschel's staging expands the work into a collage of opera, drama, testimonies, and specially developed texts.
A Stage as a Resonance Space of the Present
The set design and the space open the view to a past that does not seem concluded. Complementary chamber music by Hans Krása and Erwin Schulhoff adds historical traces alongside Heggie's contemporary composition. Young people and young adults are involved in the overall artistic concept, giving the performance an additional perspective: memory becomes an experience of living responsibility rather than a museum piece.
Powerful Voices, Concentrated Atmosphere
Andrew Finden plays the role of Mac. Haruna Yamazaki takes on the roles of Sally, Misha, and Emil; David Prosenc is involved as an actor. The performance is musically directed by Karsten Huschke. Meander Quartet, chamber orchestra, and project-speaking choir condense the theatrical atmosphere into a stage experience of vulnerability, threat, and hope.
The performance lasts about 90 minutes and takes place without an intermission. About 45 minutes after the start, strobe lights will be used. The age recommendation is 16 years.
Conclusion: A Stage Experience that Resonates
Before it Gets Completely Dark connects modern chamber opera, theatrical art, and historical reflection into an intense theater evening. The audience can expect a musically rich production about memory, exclusion, and the strength to confront one's own history. Those who want to experience musical theater as contemporary, socially conscious stage art will find a particularly compelling evening in Koblenz.
