Hoffmann's Tales: A fantastic opera between love, art, and madness
On October 8, 2026, a feverishly glowing dream world opens in the theater tent of Theater Koblenz: Jacques Offenbach's fantastic opera Hoffmann's Tales leads into the inner realms of a poet who wavers between memory, longing, and self-destruction. The performance begins at 18:00 and combines great musical theater moments with a production by Anja Nicklich.
A poet on the edge of the abyss
Hoffmann appears as a dreamer, drinker, and artist, whose lost love Stella becomes the starting point of a nocturnal vision. In a dramatic downward spiral, he relives his great love stories. Olympia, Antonia, and Giulietta become three colorful mirrors of the same longing – between artificial perfection, deadly devotion, and Venetian seduction.
Offenbach's musical labyrinth
Jacques Offenbach's last opera unfolds an extraordinary dramaturgy of romantic sound poetry, grotesque breaks, and dark hallucination. Heavenly melodies meet eerie stage moments; love and inspiration appear as two sides of a creative obsession. The musical direction is led by Sejoon Park, accompanied by the State Orchestra Rheinische Philharmonie.
Direction between romance and madness
Anja Nicklich focuses on the price of art and the incurable desire that drives artistic creation. The production transforms Offenbach's opera into a journey through memory and guilt. In the stage design, dream and reality coalesce, while lighting moods, costumes, and acoustics make the protagonist's changing emotional states visible.
A theater tent as a floating opera space
The theater tent on the fortress plateau of Fortress Ehrenbreitstein creates a special theater atmosphere. The rising grandstand offers a good view of the stage from all seats. The venue concept connects immediate audience proximity with a great musical theater effect. Supers titles and an audio support system facilitate access to the performance.
French opera with German supertitles
Hoffmann's Tales will be performed in French with German supertitles. The performance is aimed at visitors aged 12 and above. Additionally, a VR work introduction titled Offenbach Revealed is available, introducing Offenbach's compositional workshop and the history of the opera’s creation.
Conclusion: A stage experience full of sound and shadow
Those who wish to experience great acting, expressive operatic voices, and a visually powerful production between romance and madness will find an extraordinary theater evening in Koblenz. Hoffmann's Tales invites you to experience the price of love, the power of memory, and the creative force of art live.
