Out of the Same Wood: A Poetic Puppet Theater About Being Different
When CHILD looks up at the sky, a touching journey through the big questions of growing up begins at the Theater Koblenz. Ingeborg von Zadow's puppet theater piece tells of generational conflicts, the desire for freedom, and the search for one's own place in a world where not everyone works the same way.
Between Cloud-Gazing and Family Conflict
CHILD no longer understands the world: Whatever they do and how they do it always seems wrong to their parents. Their demand is that CHILD must become like they are – after all, everyone is made of the same wood. But CHILD wants one thing above all: to look at the sky. From this simple wish develops a multifaceted stage conflict about self-determination, expectations, and the question of how much difference a community can tolerate.
Puppets as Dramatic Bodies
The production by Stephan Siegfried combines puppet, figure, and object theater into an independent visual language. Different types of puppets shape the action directly: Their respective physical characteristics open possibilities, set boundaries, and become a dramatic engine themselves. Set design and costumes by Christof von Büren make physical diversity visible and give the production a sensual, playful form.
Theater for Young People Aged Eight and Up
With fine humor and great empathy, the production leads into the experience world of children who must assert themselves between family expectations and their own curiosity. Friends show CHILD that belonging does not depend on uniformity. The acting in puppet theater creates an immediate dialogue between stage and audience – attentive, rich in imagery, and open to one's own thoughts.
A Premiere with Literary Weight
“Out of the Same Wood” was created as a new piece by Ingeborg von Zadow on commission from the Theater Koblenz and will premiere in 2026. The author received a playwright scholarship from the German Literature Fund for this work. Her theater texts have, among other awards, received the Brüder-Grimm Prize of the State of Berlin and been nominated for the German Children's Theater Prize and the Mülheim Children's Theater Piece Prize.
Conclusion: A Stage Experience About Freedom and Belonging
The audience can expect an imaginative production with poetic images, precise puppet handling, and a story that immediately reaches both children and adults. “Out of the Same Wood” invites you to experience the world through CHILD's eyes anew – and to live how a moving theater adventure is created from wood, light, and acting.
