A feverish dream journey between love, art, and madness
On November 4, 2026, the theater tent at the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress will transform into a nocturnal resonance space for Jacques Offenbach's fantastic opera Hoffmann's Tales. The production by Anja Nicklich leads into the inner spaces of a poet whose memories, yearnings, and fears merge into a kaleidoscopic stage event.
Hoffmann's love tales as a mirror of the soul
The poet, dreamer, and drinker Hoffmann stands on the edge of collapse. In a night soaked with alcohol, memory, and longing, he conjures the figure of his lost beloved Stella. From this conjuration arise three visionary female figures: Olympia, the artificially created perfect woman, Antonia, whose singing costs her life, and Giulietta, the seductive Venetian.
The three episodes appear as different mirrors of the same longing. Love and inspiration, desire and destruction lie closely together. Offenbach's music opens spaces between romantic intimacy, grotesque exaggeration, and nocturnal hallucination.
A production about the price of art
Anja Nicklich focuses on the creative power and its abysses. The dramaturgy connects art, memory, and guilt into a downward spiral in which Hoffmann experiences his own projections. The stage design becomes the psychological terrain: a place between dream chamber, memory space, and feverish night vision.
The musical direction is taken by Sejoon Park. Tobias Haaks plays the title role, and Haruna Yamazaki appears as Muse and Nicklausse. Hannah Beutler takes on Olympia, Giulietta, Antonia, and Stella; Nico Wouterse or Christoph Plessers embodies the demonic adversaries Lindorf, Coppelius, Dr. Miracle, and Dapertutto.
Offenbach's sound world in the theater tent
The acoustics of the theater tent and the presence of the Rheinland Philharmonic give the opera a special immediacy. Between shimmering sound surfaces, dramatic orchestral colors, and vocal brilliance, a theater atmosphere emerges in which the audience engages directly with Hoffmann's unstable consciousness state.
The performance takes place in French with German surtitles. A work introduction with VR elements additionally offers an unusual access to Offenbach's compositional world and the characters of the opera.
A stage experience for opera and theater lovers
Hoffmann's Tales combines great acting art, virtuosic singing, and a visually powerful direction. The audience's reaction arises from the interplay of comedic, eerie, and deeply moving moments. Offenbach's last opera appears as a dream journey through the vulnerability of the artist and as an intense meditation on the power of imagination.
The audience can expect an intense musical theater experience with fantastic characters, dark romance, and a production that draws attention behind the facade of the artist. Those who want to experience opera as a living stage art will find an evening full of sound, light, and emotional tension in Koblenz.
