Between Dream and Madness: Hoffmann's Tales at the Theater Koblenz

On Sunday, November 22, 2026, a dark, shimmering stage space opens in the theater tent Koblenz for Jacques Offenbach's fantastic opera Hoffmann's Tales. The performance begins at 15:00 and leads into a world where memory, love, and artistic obsession intertwine indistinguishably.

An opera as a feverish dream journey

The poet Hoffmann stands on the brink of collapse. In a night filled with alcohol, longing, and inner abysses, he encounters the great love figures of his life. Olympia appears as an artificially created, flawless woman; Antonia embodies the singer whose art becomes a deadly passion; Giulietta leads into a Venetian world where every certainty melts away.

The three women become reflections of a single longing. Anja Nicklich's production interprets Offenbach's last opera as a psychological artist drama about the price of art and the incurable desire that arises from creative obsession.

Fantastic opera between romance and abyss

Offenbach's music combines heavenly sound with nocturnal hallucination. The dramaturgy moves between romantic love narrative, grotesque theater, and dark self-questioning. At the center stands an artist whose imagination transforms and simultaneously destroys life.

The set design by Antonia Mautner Markhof, the costumes by Janina Thiel, and the lighting by Michael Reif create a theatrical atmosphere between dream chamber, mirror cabinet, and inner ruin space. The acting, operatic singing, and orchestral coloring combine to create a sensual stage experience that makes Hoffmann's perception immediately tangible.

Strong voices and musical direction

The musical direction is taken over by Sejoon Park. On stage are, among others, Tobias Haaks, Haruna Yamazaki, Hannah Beutler, Nico Wouterse, Nando Zickgraf, Jongmin Lim, Christoph Plessers, Piotr Gryniewicki, Tobias Rathgeber, and Christiane Thomas. The production is supported by the opera choir, the extras, and the State Orchestra Rheinische Philharmonie.

The opera will be performed in French with German surtitles. Attendance is recommended from age 12.

Special work introduction with Virtual Reality

Before the performance, there is an opportunity to participate in the VR work introduction Offenbach Revealed. From 14:30 to 14:50, Jacques Offenbach will take the audience into his composition workshop and the figures of his fantastic opera in the theater tent. The introduction is only bookable in connection with a visit to the performance.

Conclusion: An opera evening as a boundary experience

Hoffmann's Tales promises an intense stage experience between great music, visual imagination, and psychological depth. Those who want to experience the theatrical atmosphere of a modern opera production and discover Offenbach's multifaceted sound world live will find an evening full of shadows, longing, and luminous stage images at the theater tent Koblenz.
